A question I’m often asked is about how Google determines where to rank Websites on their search engine. First of all, we know that it’s crucial to have a solid website that draws people in. Even after our site passes an outsider’s test, what does that mean for your Google rank?

Google can be tough to crack, especially at a time when everyone is trying for the #1 spot on the search engine.  It takes a few tweaks and basic strategies to rank higher.

  • Keywords: Do some research to find out exactly which keywords would help your business.  For local business, be sure to include your location, as well as products and services. Add these words to content you publish online – on your Website and your social media sites!
  • Submit: Find some reputable directories (local and national) and submit your organization’s information, including address, phone number, hours, etc.  Google recognizes these practices, and it can help your Google local listing.
  • Rate & Review: Ask past clients to rate and review your business. Not only does this benefit you, but Google can pick up on genuine, positive reviews, and the publicity may help move your ranking in the right direction.
  • Ask some local organizations that you’re affiliated with (Chamber of Commerce, BBB, Networking groups) to add a link on their website that directs people to your Website. Getting inbound links from reputable, relevant companies and organizations is still critical to winning the search engine game.

These are just a few simple things you can do to improve your rankings.  Google loves fresh, new, frequent content, and anything you can do to increase that will greatly help your search engine ranking.
