What an action figure taught me about branding
Social media’s been buzzing with a throwback-style trend: people creating custom action figure mock-ups of themselves — packaging and all. It’s clever, it’s quirky, and it actually serves up a masterclass in branding.
LET’S GO DEEPER ⤵
What makes this action figure trend more than just a clever social media moment?
👉 It forces you to get crystal clear on your brand.
If you had to fit the real you in business form into a tiny plastic box—complete with accessories, a tagline, and a flashy sticker on the front—what would make the cut?
This is where clarity meets authenticity. It’s not about what looks cool. It’s about what’s true about you.
✅ What are the tools of your trade?
✅ What do people come to you for, time and time again?
✅ How do you want to be remembered?
The action figure box becomes a metaphor for how you’re perceived, packaged, and promoted online. And when those three things align with who you really are? That’s the sweet spot.
The more you your brand is, the more your audience gets it—and gets you. People can feel when it’s authentic. And trust me, authentic always wins.
HOW THIS MIGHT LOOK IN YOUR BUSINESS 🎯
Let me be clear: this isn’t about chasing a viral moment or recreating a trend that’s already come and gone. This is about applying the thinking behind the trend to your brand strategy moving forward.
Here’s how to turn the action figure mindset into a branding exercise that works beyond the trend:
🛠 Pick Your Signature Tools:
What are the 2–3 “accessories” that show up in your business every day? These can be physical items (like a camera, microphone, or laptop) or symbolic ones (like empathy, strategy, or bold ideas). These tools say a lot about what you do and how you show up.
💬 Write Your Tagline:
Imagine your brand had to fit into one powerful sentence. What would you want it to say? Try this prompt:
“I help [who] do [what] so they can [result].”
Keep it simple. This helps you stay clear and consistent in your messaging.
🚨 Add a Call-to-Action (CTA):
What’s the next best step someone should take after discovering your brand? Your call-to-action doesn’t have to be loud—it just has to be there.
Industry Related Examples:
🗓️ “Book a strategy session” – great for coaches, consultants, or service-based biz owners.
📥 “Download the free guide” – perfect if you offer a lead magnet or resource.
📣 “Subscribe to the newsletter” – for those building community and nurturing via email.
📲 “DM me to get started” – if you’re active on social and enjoy 1:1 convos.
🎤 “Invite me to speak” – for personal brands or speakers
🔗 “Click the link in bio” – quick and easy classic call to action for Instagram
The goal of this exercise is to bring clarity to your brand—not just for your audience, but for you. When you know exactly how you want to be seen, showing up online becomes a whole lot easier (and more fun).
Here’s the truth: when this action figure trend started making waves, my social media team got excited and created a mock-up for me. It was clever, creative, and on point for the moment.
But… it didn’t feel like me.
So I passed. Not because the idea wasn’t good — it just didn’t feel authentic to my personal brand. And authenticity is one of those “accessories” that’s core to my brand.
But here’s the twist:
We did run with it for several of our Impact Social Media agency clients—and it worked beautifully.
Why? Because it fit their voice, their energy, and their brand personality. For them, it made sense. And it sparked fresh conversations around visibility and connection.
For me, it reminded me how important clarity and getting down to the core of your brand is — who you are, what you’re about, and how you want to show up.
Trends come and go, but clarity lasts.
And clarity + consistency? That’s what builds a brand people trust, remember, and talk about.
Because your most powerful branding move?
Being exactly who you are, consistently and clearly. Every time.
