Principle #12: Doing Good is Good for Business

Mantra: I know that people want to do business with people doing good in the world.

During an episode of Andy Stanley’s Leadership Podcast, I heard his guest, Jeff Henderson, talk about the community as one of the groups every organization should be for. And then he said a line that hit me like a ton of bricks. He said, “Doing good is good for business.” That line really resonated with me, as it has proven to be true for both me and my clients. More than ever before, people want to know what a business stands for and the impactit has on the community and world. A company’s core values and mission can be a key determining factor in a person’s overall buying decision. Socialmedia provides a perfect place to share the good we are doing in the world and help connect us to our customers on a deeper level.

Here are some examples of ways businesses are doing good in the world. Any of these would be worthy of being part of your overall digital story.

1. Support Nonprofits and Charities. Partner with reputable nonprofits or charitable organizations and share updates about the positive impact of these partnerships. Use social media to raise awareness about their causes.

2. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives. Engage in various CSR programs, such as supporting local communities, environmental conservation, education, or promoting social causes. Share updates, photos, and success stories from these initiatives on social media platforms.

3. Transparent and Ethical Practices. Showcase your commitment to ethical business practices, fair labor conditions, and sustainable sourcing. Share behind-the-scenes content that highlights how your business operates responsibly.

4. Employee Well-Being. Demonstrate your concern for employee well-being by promoting work-life balance, professional development programs, and inclusive workplace practices. Share employee testimonials and success stories.

5. Crisis Response and Support. During times of crisis or natural disasters, use your social media platforms to inform and support those affected. Show empathy and sensitivity in your messaging.

6. Positive Storytelling. Use storytelling techniques to share inspiring stories of individuals or communities that have benefited from your business’s initiatives. This humanizes your brand and helps build a positive image.

There you have it—as you decide how to celebrate #GivingTuesday, don’t forget to share the good news with your social media audience. Social media has its challenges, but at the end of the day, it’s still a community of people who want to celebrate the good in the world. Now, get out there and do some good!
