Last week, we told you about the change to the pixel size for custom tabs on Facebook. This week, Facebook’s making another change — you might call this one an upgrade — and it’s one that’s been a long time coming.

If you mention Facebook Chat in a group of people who use the site on a fairly regular basis, you’ll probably be met with gripes and groans. But the good news is, Facebook is upgrading this feature to make it less annoying and more user-friendly.

Many people have issued complaints to Facebook about their Chat functionality — sometimes it comes and goes or even stops completely. A lot of people just don’t even bother using it as a result. Now, Facebook has stated it’s “working hard to end those interruptions so that your experience is stable and consistent.”

According to its blog, Facebook has made Chat “faster and more stable, fixed bugs and improved the technology on which it runs.” In doing so, Facebook has decided to no longer support Internet Explorer 6 browers, effective Sept. 15. This means if you’re using this version, you need to download a newer version here.

Downloading a newer version of a browser is a small price to pay in order to get improved functionality on a tool that makes instant communication that much easier. It has essentially made AOL Instant Messenger — the go-to tool for years — obsolete, and it’s a great way to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues.
