What makes some social media posts stand out from others?  What inspires your followers to click “Like” – or to leave a comment or “Share” the post with others.

It may be an active fan base, reliable product, or great deals that keep engagement high, but the right types of posts can also make a world of difference in engagement.

Having posted numerous types of content and studying audience engagement over the years, we’ve compiled the most buzz-worthy types of posts that can help you receive the engagement you’re looking for.

1) Posts with Photos: Your audience loves seeing photos, especially relevant ones of your business happenings and accomplishments.  Bonus points if the photo includes your clients or fan base – that guarantees even more engagement!

2) Video Posts: YouTube and other videos are extremely popular.  You can make videos a social experience by sharing your favorites with your followers.  This breaks up the typical text post, and it can be fun for your audience to see you (or your business) or something that you find helpful or interesting.

3) Quotes: Quotes are often words of wisdom that many people can relate to.  They’re the type of posts that often share the right thing at the right time.  Quotes are also short and sweet, and readers are more likely to read something that’s brief and to the point.  Also, try to use quotes that are presented in a graphic/photo format (see below for example), as this maintains higher engagement and greater visibility.

4) Questions or Polls: People love to answer questions and share opinions, so this is the perfect way to integrate that into your social media strategy.  It also shows your followers that you care and that you’re taking the time to engage with them and hear their voice.  Posting an occasional question or poll also helps you to see how your audience thinks, which can help with strategy or product/service development down the road.

5) Article Link + Photo: Although most articles will auto-fill a photo when posted, it’s actually more eye-catching to post the photo separately.  For example, post the name of the article, post the link, let Facebook (or other platform) auto-fill in the photo, then click the “X” or “Delete” next to the filled article.  The link should still be posted in the main box.  After this, attach a relevant photo – this brings more attention to the post, and has been proven to increase post views.

6) “The Top 5…” Posts: Any “numbers” post seems to receive more engagement than a typical article.  For example, “The Top 3 Qualities of a Strong Leader” or “10 Traits That Make Employees Stand Out” often pique the interest of your followers; it’s the type of post that you have to read! Sometimes a title can truly make all the difference in your engagement numbers.
